final VAT return

Hello there,

I have a small business which is VAT-registered but my turnover hasn’t reached the registration threshold for a while and so I’m about to deregister. I know that I have to submit a final VAT return but I’m not quite sure how to do it right. Can anyone help me? Thank you!

Hi Mike,

The form you need to complete is VAT 193 (VAT 197 in Wales). I would recommend you to use HMRC online services to do it. All you have to do is sign up and you can fill in and submit the form online. It’s much easier than when you do it in the paper form.

Now, in your final VAT Return you have to include VAT due on stocks and assets you own on the day of submitting the return. You must also include tangible goods (these are physical objects like computers or stock) on which VAT could be reclaimed on the day of their purchase. However, there are things which you cannot include; these are goods on which VAT could not be reclaimed on the day of their purchase (e.g. items bought for private use).

Is that everything you wanted to know? If you have any further questions, just ask.
